1. Understand the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Osgood-Schlatter Disease[]
Pathogenesis[]
Osgood-Schlatter disease is a self-limiting disorder, characterised by tibial tuberosity apophysitis and quadriceps tendonitis. It is caused by repeated traction, leading to microavulsion fractures and inflammation.
Ogood-Schlatter disease tends to affect physically active 10-14 year-olds, as the tibial tuberosity has not yet completed ossification, and the development of quadriceps strength puts excessive force on the tibial tuberosity.
Treatment[]
- Symptomatic pain relief
- - Therapeutic: - paracetamol or ibuprofen
- - Ice packs
- - Advise knee pads may provide pain relief on kneeling
- Lifestyle advice
- - Advise exercise modification in moderate or severe cases
- - Consider referral to physiotherapy if recovery is slow
- - Corticosteroid injections are not recommended
